The positioning of bathroom is one of the most difficult decisions in designing a house. Bathroom is a yin Qi area and it belongs to water element in Feng shui. It c

an be divided into two parts-the bathing area and the toilet or WC area. It has draining and flushing functions and handles human wastes. It washes and cleans us both physically and emotionally and eliminates waste products from us. In older times when modern day flushing and plumbing techniques were unavailable, the toilets were placed far away from the house and bathing areas also placed away from the house near some water source for the sake of cleanliness. But now a day with modern systems bathrooms are designed in the house itself.
Location of bathroom:
All the eight direction/ sectors corresponds to specific human aspirations in feng shui as pointed out in the bagua map below and each sector is very important for a

Generally in feng shui the bathrooms are avoided in South-West sector which is the sector of family, marriage and romance love life. A happy married life and cordial family relations every family dream off. The other sector which is avoided is South-East being sector of wealth. Nobody wishes his money go in drain.good life.. As the bathrooms are connected with flushing placing it anywhere shall affect one or the other part of life. It is a very difficult decision for any house maker.
There is also a big no to placement of bathroom in the Centre of the house which is also called yin-yang point as it destabilizes the energy in the whole house. The centre of the house should be as open as possible for good flow of chi in the house and all around luck and especially in this period of 8 in Feng shui which will end in Feb, 2024.

Thus while deciding the location of bathroom the owner of the house has to take a very vital decision that which aspiration is more important to him and with which he can compromise as shown in bagua map below:

Some important tips for location are:

A bathroom should not be placed on the upper floor above kitchen. In feng shui the stove in the kitchen symbolizes health and family wealth and its element is fire.Water energy of the bathroom extinguishes the fire energy of the kitchen and thus endangers the wealth and health of the family. If this situation cannot be avoided move the stove at least 10 feet away from the waste pipe of the toilet.

Avoid placing a bathroom above the bed room as the contaminated qui of the bathroom wrecks havoc on the relationships of the occupants.

A bathroom should not be placed above the main door as the emanating energy from the toilets contaminates the benevolent qui that enters the house making it sick and devoid of good luck.

Avoid bathroom in the front hall, facing / near the main door. As the house cannot reap the benefit of the chi entering the house. It will be flushed out of the house by the bathroom or the contaminated qui will circulate in the house.

Avoid placing bed in the bedroom in such way that on the other side of wall which it shares with bathroom is having toilet flush tank. It brings many sleeping disorders to the occupant.

Note in Advance feng shui formulas like Flying star, generally the bathrooms are located in those sectors where stars are inauspicious to suppress bad st
ars. For calculating this very experienced Feng shui experts are required.

In Classical feng shui the toilet is regarded as bad Feng shui and the Geomancers regarded that it should NOT be placed in the following positions according to the Chinese horoscope symbols:

Designing / Decorating /Maintenance of Bathroom

After selection of location the next part of designing, decorating and maintenance of bathroom starts. The three basic principles for this are: Clean, Organised and Fresh Air.

A well organised bathroom design is shown in the picture below:

vThe WC and the bathing area should be as far as possible and should be separated by some partition/ curtain.

v The WC should not be visible while entering the bathroom. If bathroom are attached with the room and the bed faces the bathroom door create some visible division between them.

v As far as possible keep water pipes and drains confined to one wall of the bathroom as depicted in the picture below.

v The doors of the bathroom should remain closed all the time and the toilet seat always down when not in use.Closing drains in your tub and sink help conserve the energy.

v The bathroom should have window/ ventilators to let fresh air in. Install a good fresh air exhaust fan and let it start all the time.

v Create aroma station in your bathroom. Choose candles, soaps, lotions from aroma. While rose and jasmine aroma attracts romance, the citrus aroma of lemon and orange stimulates imagination. The other wonderful aromas are sandalwood, lavender, yang yang.

v Introduce mirrors in your bathroom, it stimulates the good energy. It should not reflect your whole body while sitting on WC. The mirrors to be kept sparkling clean.

v Keep minimum cosmetics in the bathroom as it creates sense of insecurity. Further get rid of fashion magazines or tabloids from the bathroom as these make you feel that you will never be rich, thin or beautiful enough.

v Bathrooms should be hidden as far as possible in the house. Placing full length mirror on the outside door makes it symbolically disappear. A very effective tip for wrongly placed bathrooms.

v Everything in bathroom should be in good working condition. The leaks must be mixed immediately as these denote money loss. No garbage or broken item in the bathroom.

v Tie red tape or red ribbon on the outgoing pipe of the bathroom to keep the energy from flowing out.

v Introduce lively wood element in the bathroom like bamboo plant. Rotate plant every week in sunlight to let it stay healthy. Some sea salt may be put in bowl as it absorbes negative energy. Do not forget to change it periodically.

v A small light should be lit 24 hours in the bathroom.

Vaastu Fusion in bathroom

§ The ideal location of bathroom as per Vaastu Shastra is West and North-West. The second good location is South-east. If these are attached to a room then these should be located in the above mentioned directions of the room.

§ The under ground septic tanks are preferred in North-West.

§ Location of bathroom in North-East and Centre is prohibited.

§ Large window may be in North while small ventilators are good in East or West.

§ Mirror may be put on the North or east wall of the bathroom.

§ WC should be in West, South or South west of the bathroom and it should be oriented North or South. It should be placed away from the bathing area.

§ Wash basins, bath tubs, shower should be placed in North, East or North-East direction. The head of the bath tub should be in South.

§ Avoid marble flooring in the bathroom.

§ Door of the bathroom should be in East or North-east away from commode.

§ Light colours should be used in bathrooms.The slope of water should be in North-east in bathroom.

§ tThese Feng shui and vaastu guidelines goes a long way in creating the most difficult place of the house. A fusion of two can give wonderful results.

Wind Chimes- Magical Feng Shui tool for Enhancement and Protection

Those who are aware or know a little about Feng Shui must be familiar with Wind Chimes. It is one of the most popular Feng shui item in India. You can find lots of homes in your neighbourhood hanging this as also almost every gift shop selling it. Wind Chimes are generally made of steel, wood, copper hollow rods hung in a group. The history of wind chimes dates back to prehistoric times in many cultures. It is said that it originated in India in the form of Wind bells which were hung outside the temples and then moved to South Asia from China, Bali to Tibet and Japan. In Buddhism wind bells are used in many holy rituals. Feng shui focuses on the flow of energy called “CHI” and its flow has direct impact on person’s health, happiness and luck. Wind chime is used as a sound cure to correct the path of energy flow and removing various blockages, thereby enhancing the overall luck. These make harmonious sound when a gentle breeze blows.

Material of Wind Chime
The material of it is chosen according to the element of the sector where you are introducing it. Metal wind chimes are good for West,North-West and North Sectors whereas wood is preferred in East, South-East and South sectors and ceramics is used in South-west, North-east and centre sectors. Hanging metal wind chime in wooden sectors of East and South-east should be avoided. However sometimes metal wind chimes are also used as cure for malignant stars flying in this sector in advanced Feng shui methods. But these should be used under the guidance of experienced Feng shui master. Listen to chime before purchasing. The sound must be pleasing to the ear that lifts your spirits If the sound is annoying, discard it. Metal wind chimes usually works well as its sound is more penetrating which corrects the flow of “CHI”, the energy.


Number of Rods
The good number of rods is 6,7,8,or 9. When 6 or 8 rods are generally used for luck enhancement and for beating the bad luck 5 rod wind chimes are used specially in sectors where illness star 2 and quarrelsome star 3 resides as per Advanced formulas of Feng shui.


Size and place of hanging
Choose a size suitable to the space. Very big chimes not preferred indoors while very small wind chimes may not be potent enough outside or in a large room. Generally these are placed outside the door so that they can create sound when wind blows or someone enters the premises. These can be hanged inside the rooms also preferably at the height of your waist.

Usages of wind chimes
Wind chimes are used for protection, purification and enhancement of energy flow in certain areas.
  • Hang a 5 rod wind chime on the middle door if there are three doors in a row. It will remove the affliction.
  • Hang a 5 rod wind chime on the overhead exposed beam. It will deflect poison arrows caused by the beam.
  • If there is a tree or pole or some poison arrows from neighbours pointed at your door, hang a 5 rod wind chime in between. It will smoothen the flow of energy towards your house/office.
  • Hang a wind chime in the south sector of your house/living room to attract fame and popularity. Wooden wind chimes with 9 rods are preferred here as the ruling number of south is 9 in Feng shui.
  • In a room or building having only north facing windows, little sun light reaches indoors. Thus creating cold and melancholy atmosphere. Use 6,7,8 or 9 rod metal wind chimes in north,west and north-west to bring more energy in the house.
  • North facing entrance houses are often marked with isolation as the ruling element of north is water in Feng shui. Hanging metal wind chimes at the entrance brings more life and vitality in the house.
  • Hang 2 or 9 rod ceramic or pottery wind chime in south-west sector of the house/living room to improve relationship luck.
  • Off course looking to improve children luck, hang 6 or 7 rod metal wind chime in west and to get support of mentor hang 6 or 7 rod metal wind chime in North-west sector of house/living room.

  1. Bagua or Pakua mirror is one of the most powerful symbol of protection in Feng Shui. In China and South East Asia it is the highest spiritual symbol and commands respect. It is used to deflect and diffuse the negative energy also known as SHA QI and it also wards off ghosts and spirits that cause bad luck and health problems. It is a octagon shaped wooden frame divided into eight sections with a mirror in the centre. The eight sections representing eight trigrams each having three lines broken or straight. Each trigrams represents a season, a direction and above all symbolically shows Family nucleus made up of father, Mother, elder son, middle son, Younger son, elder daughter, middle daughter and Younger daughter. Perhaps this is why with the Family nucleus, the Pakua is so powerful. The pakua mirrors are designed in auspicious red, green, yellow, gold colours. These colours represent growth, creativity, vigour, productivity, success and wealth. The mirror used in the centre is either concave or convex. Bagua mirrors come in various sizes, the average size being 4 to 6 inches.

    The bagua mirror is commonly used to disperse and neutralize the attacking negative energy or sha qi from following sources.
    * A lamp post, bus stop sign post, power line pole, electric transformer or a tree trunk in front of the house entrance.
    * At T- intersection where the road points at the house.
    * The sharp corners of a neighboring building, roof line edge or any structure pointing at your main door.
    * Ugly scenery
    * A cemetery, place of worship, mortuary, police station, jail opposite your home.
    * As mentioned earlier these can be used to counteract negative Qi of a spiritual nature.

    WHERE TO PLACE A BAGUA (PAKUA) MIRROR
    First Feng shui rule is that never hang it inside the home. This includes the apartment building hallways. Though the hallway is outside your apartment but it is inside the building. It is not a décor item.

    Traditionally these are placed above the main door or above a big window that is facing outside negative energies/ offending object/ poison arrow. It should be hung at the centre point. Offer some prayer to God before hanging it so that it can be charged or “opening of eye” before using it. Check the bagua mirror regularly and keep it clean. If the glass or wood is damaged, please change it. Sometime you can find metal bagua mirrors also , these are hanged in metal directions of the bagua.
    It is always advisable to consult a Feng shui expert before hanging this powerful tool.

While designing a building the word “Staircase “puzzles every household, designer, consultant, and builder. A large numbers of taboos are attached with the designing and placement of staircase in a house. Staircase is the place where people go up and down. It connects the various levels of the building. Through it the ‘CHI’ moves from one level to another. The energy is constantly moving up and down in staircase. If CHI quality is weak and it moves very fast or it is blocked or unable to move to another level or it get polluted, the residents of the house can not enjoy good health and fortune. Feng shui offers very simple solution to this puzzle. Following are some guidelines for designing and placement of staircase.

Placement of staircase

· The staircase must not be in the centre of the house. It is like a knife stuck in the heart. The residents may feel stressed all the time.
· The staircase either top or bottom should not face the main door or very close to it as the chi will be pulled in and siphoned up to the next floor. Thereby creating an imbalanced rush of chi to the next floor and depriving the ground level of the much needed flow of chi (energy). Further it will pull the energy out of the main door very quickly carrying along with it the finances, energy and health of the residents.
· The staircase should not start or end in front of a toilet. It should not face a toilet door. The staircase should not face a bedroom door.
· The staircase should not face another staircase and should avoid having main staircase in living room.
· The staircases are better located on left side facing outwards i.e. the DRAGON side of the building.
· Most importantly try to locate the staircase in inauspicious sectors as per the Flying Star System of Feng Shui to press down the bad luck caused by inauspicious stars. Take proper consultation from experienced practitioner.

Designing of staircase
· DUAL staircases i.e. one form the right and one from the left of the central door or hallway not auspicious for the smaller buildings as the CHI is too quick to leave the home. If building is large like hotel etc., no problem with this design.
· The staircase should not be straight; rather they should be gently curving thus embracing the energy that comes through it.
· Avoid opening or hollow at the back of each step as it suggest leakages.
· Dilapidated stairs and unstable railing are not good.
· Avoid carpeting stairs with RED colour as it brings misfortunes.
· Avoid water under the stairs as it hurts success of the next generation of the family. Similarly avoid having temple or study table under the stairs.
· Staircase can be of metal, wood or earth elements depending upon its location. Metal is suitable in NORTH, wood is suitable for SOUTH,SOUTH-EAST and EAST, while Earth element is suitable in NORTH-EAST, SOUTH-WEST and NORTH-WEST direction.

SPIRAL STAIRCASE may be quite charming and aesthetically pleasing in your home but a BIG NO to it. These resemble Cork-screw impact. It can damage your health particularly the heart and coronary diseases. If a spiral staircase already existed in a house you moved in , this is a slightly better situation. If you construct it, it is like creating health problems for life long.

MANDARIN DUCK Stairs are that spilt and go into two different directions.One leads upstairs to the next floor while the other leads to a lower level like basement. This layout divides the CHI ,thus confusing its natural tendency to move forward. This creates disharmony among family members, employees and boss. Separation, divorces,lot of fightings are also very common in such houses.Sometimes lack of focus can also occur.

NUMBER OF STEPS:- Traditionally there are two methods of determining number of steps.

1. Three step cycle method under which step 1 and 2 are auspicious and step 3 in inauspicious. As per this method following number of steps are auspicious 1,2,4,5,7,8,10,11,13,14,16,17,19,20,22,23,25,26,28,29,31,32,34,35,37,38,40,41

2. The Four step cycle method under which step 1 and 2 are auspicious and step 3 and 4 are inauspicious. As per this method the auspicious number of steps are :
1,2,5,6,9,10,13,14,17,18,21,22,25,26,29,30,33,34,37,38,41

By combining both the methods we get following number of steps which are
auspicious:

1,2,5,10,13,14,17,22,25,26,29,34,37,38,41

Note that each step including the step at landing is counted.

The staircase should be wide and well lit all the time.

A crystal chandelier just before the start of the staircase does wonders.

Place a pair of Fu-dogs on either side of the staircase to protect against bad energy going forward.
